Who is the daughter in My Daughter's Cakes?
Denise Smith, owner of My Daughter's Cakes, Rochelle Park NJ
What is the name of your company/organization, your title in the company and how long have you been in business? Denise Smith. My company is "My Daughter's Cakes." I am the owner, baker, and cake designer.
How did you get started? I have been baking and cooking since I was a child, though I never thought I had what it takes to pursue it professionally. A few very kind words from my chef-instructor at The French Culinary Institute was all it took.
What sets your company apart from your competition? Outside of the deliciousness of the cakes themselves, I think it would be the handmade sugar floral arrangements and elegant style of the cakes.
What kind of interesting things will you show us at the Bride Chic: Bergen County Brides, event on December 2? I will be doing a demonstration on cake design and sugar flowers, showing the brides how I get from initial meeting to a beautifully finished cake. And there will be cake for everyone to sample.
Fun Questions!
Favorite Wedding Cake Flavor - It's hard to say what my favorite flavor is, though it definitely involves chocolate! My newest favorites are the banana cake with chocolate sour cream ganache and the Grand Marnier cake with dark chocolate ganache. (we wouldn't mind tasting any of those flavors! ;) )
Favorite Place to Travel To My favorite place to travel to is any place with my husband.
Favorite Local Hangout/Restaurant One of our favorite restaurants is iGemelli in South Hackensack, which has the most amazing italian food.
Favorite Cocktail Campari. Nothing added. No ice. Just Campari in a glass.
Tell us something random about you I am often asked how I came up with my business name. Well, at a time when I was making cakes for family events only, people who never attended the events would tell me that they saw my cakes and loved them. I couldn't figure our how they came to see pictures of my cakes. I inquired of one person, who said, "Your mother showed me pictures." I asked my mother about this and she said, "Oh yes, I have them all here on my iPhone. I always go up to people and show them and say, 'have you seen my daughter's cakes?'" The rest is history :)
